This book is the story of Leslie Talbot, convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Told from two points of view, the reader delves deeply into the psyche of Talbot, coming to understand her worldview. In the first part of the book, we meet Talbot through the eyes of the former cop turned attorney hired by Talbot, not to file appeals or try to save her life, but to be her errand boy. The deal leaves him independently wealthy, but as he comes to know Talbot, he comes to see that wealth hardly makes life better. Talbot changes everything in his life. The second part of the book presents Talbot’s point of view. She provides a long reflection on life on Death Row and the events that led her there. We get to see the world through her eyes, and that view is incredibly cynical. This is such a complete contrast to the way I see the world, that it was a bit jarring. But, as presented here, it is entirely believable for the character.
This is probably the best written, self-published fictional story I’ve ever read. I was about to say that it was a pleasure, except the nature of the story isn’t exactly “feel good”. However, the writing makes this story compelling, and I found it hard to put down. It feels like an authentic portrait of a Death Row inmate. Well done.
